To ensure your chats are backed up before restoring them on a new Android device:

  1. Open WhatsApp > More options> Settings > Chats > Chat Backup .

  2. Choose the Google account you want to back up your chats to. You can also create a local backup on your device.

  3. Click Backup .

  4. After saving the backup, you can remove WhatsApp from your device and install it on your new Android device.

Restore a Google Drive backup

To keep a copy of your chat history on Google Drive, you can enable automatic chat backup and set the frequency to be daily, weekly, or monthly. In order to successfully restore a Google Drive backup, you must use the phone number and Google Account that you used to create the backup.

To restore your backup:

  1. Make sure your new Android device is linked to the Google Account where your backup is saved

  2. Install and open WhatsApp, then confirm your number.

  3. When prompted, click Restore to restore your chats and media from Google Drive.

  4. After the restore process is complete, click Next . Your chats will appear once the configuration is complete.

  5. After restoring your chats, WhatsApp will continue to restore your media files.

If you have installed WhatsApp but no previous Google Drive backups are available, WhatsApp will automatically restore your logs from your local backup file.

Restore records from a local backup

If you want to use a backup saved on your device, you'll need to transfer the files to the phone using a computer, file explorer, or an SD card.

To restore your backup:

  1. Download a file management app.

  2. In the file manager app, go to your local storage or sd card > WhatsApp > Databases. If your data isn't saved to the SD card, check Internal Storage or Primary Storage instead. Copy the latest backup files to the Databases folder in the local storage on your new machine.

  3. Install and open WhatsApp, then confirm your number.

  4. When prompted, click Restore to restore your chats and media from your local backup.

Note :

Restore an older local backup

If you want to restore an older local backup, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Download a file management app.

  2. In the file manager app, go to your local storage or sd card > WhatsApp > Databases . If your data isn't saved to the SD card, check Internal Storage or Primary Storage instead.

  3. Change the name of the backup file you want to restore from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12to msgstore.db.crypt12. The older backup may have used an older protocol such as crypt9 or crypt10. Do not change the number in the crypt extension.

  4. You have to uninstall WhatsApp and then reinstall it .

  5. Click Restore when prompted.
